Theologian, preacher, and author Dr. Voddie Baucham passed away Wednesday at the age of 56 after suffering a medical emergency.

“We are saddened to inform friends that our dear brother, Voddie Baucham, Jr., has left the land of the dying and entered the land of the living,” a post on his Instagram account reads.

“Earlier today, after suffering an emergency medical incident, he entered into his rest and the immediate presence of the Savior whom he loved, trusted, and served since he was converted as a college student,” the post continued. “Please pray for Bridget, their children, and grandchildren.”

He previously underwent successful heart surgery in March 2021 after experiencing “full blown heart failure” in February 2021, Church Leaders reports. Several weeks later, however, Baucham had quadruple heart surgery after doctors discovered another blockage.

Born on March 11, 1969 in Los Angeles, to a single mother, Baucham founded Voddie Baucham Ministries in 1993 and served as pastor of Grace Family Baptist in Houston, Texas. He later relocated to Zambia where he served as dean of theology at African Christian University in Lusaka. He was also a founding member of the Institute of Public Theology.

Baucham also authored several books, including Family Driven Faith, Fault Lines, and The Ever-Loving Truth. Fault Lines, released in 2021, became a national bestseller and Baucham became a leading voice in warning the church about the social justice ideology, The Christian Post reports.

According to the Voddie Baucham Ministries website, Baucham held degrees from Houston Baptist University (BA in Christianity/BA in Sociology), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (D.Min.) with additional post-graduate study at the University of Oxford, England (Regent’s Park College).

Last year, Baucham announced he and his family were returning to the U.S. as they moved to Florida. Months before his death, Founders Ministries’ president Tom Ascol announced Baucham as the president of the newly launched, Founders Seminary.

Baucham leaves behind his wife Bridget, nine children and three grandchildren.
