Nor Can We Mourn

On Tuesday I wrote of politicians seeking to steal our joy and happiness.  Apparently, those with political agendas are willing to steal our pain and suffering and loss as well.

Yesterday, a massive flash flood overwhelmed the Nepal-China border.  Current reports show 270 dead and 1300 missing.  That death toll is likely to rise significantly as time moves forward.  The video is quite disturbing.  Yes, it happened far away, in a very isolated and foreign region, but virtually everyone in this country lives downstream of some dam or the other and it should not be hard to picture such a wall of water headed your way.  You should not let distance alienate you from the devastation and loss.  In human terms this is an immense disaster and our hearts should ache for the people affected.

Interestingly, this event was not triggered by a dam failure – it is a natural event – triggered instead by glacial collapse.  That should give everyone pause.  There are truly massive forces on this planet, far beyond our control

But no – climate activists, which include the BBC, are quick to tell us all about how human generated climate change is “probably” the likely culprit.  Hundreds dead, thousands missing and they bypass the humanity of the story altogether to get straight to their political agenda.

A couple of weeks ago I took a fellow science geek to the tour of Manhattan Project sites in Oak Ridge, TN.  Being science geeks he and I were both disappointed in the lack of technical information in the tour – both of us knew more than our guides in that department.  We discussed it with them afterwards and they indicated that all their customer feedback indicated that people could care less about the tech stuff – they wanted to know the stories of people’s lives.  Who was displacesd by the project?  How did those that participated in the project live?  Humans care about humanity, not neutrons – or for that matter, what causes a glacier to collapse.

Whether they seek to co-opt our happiness or our mourning, they are dehumanizing us.  They are squelching our humanity for the sake of their political agenda.

Interestingly, as I am collecting my thoughts for this post, this Instapundit reaction, “CLIMATE CULTISTS SUFFER FROM ILLUSIONS OF HUMAN OMNIPOTENCE” to this fact:

A critical assumption of climate alarmism is that the ecosystem is fragile and we naughty, mighty humans can easily overwhelm it. So we were surprised to hear, at the recent Heartland Institute International Conference on Climate Change, that one single hurricane contains more energy than the US generates in a year.

While squelching our humanity, they are setting themselves up in god-like fashion – pretending to omnipotence.  As Captain America famously said, “There’s only one God ma’am, and I don’t think he dresses like that.”

There was a time when our political class guarded our humanity and faith.  But no more – they seek to co-opt them.  It is up to us to guard them now.  Start by praying for the people of the region that was so devastated yesterday.
