Republican lawmakers are criticizing Twitter for silencing conservative voices. National Review reports algorithms employed by Twitter that they say are designed to limit hateful content are in effect preventing the accounts of prominent Republicans from appearing in search results.

The so-called “shadow banning” has affected several conservative Republicans, such as RNC chair Ronna Romney McDaniel, and Representatives Mark Meadows, Jim Jordan, and Matt Gaetz.

However, it has not had the same effect to those on the left, whose accounts continue to auto-populate in Twitter search results.

A spokesman for Gaetz suggested the shadow ban may be related to the lawmakers’ heated exchange with Twitter executives in a hearing last week.
