In a story reminiscent of little Charlie Gard, a British judge on Tuesday said the parents of a terminally ill toddler cannot take him to Italy for treatment.

The judge rejected what he said was a final legal appeal by the parents of 23-month-old Alfie Evans, who has a degenerative neurological condition.

Doctors say Alfie is in what they call a "semi-vegetative state," but have not given any formal diagnosis.

Lawyers for Alfie's parents had secured Tuesday's hearing a day after the doctors removed life support, but then resumed it six hours later after Alfie continued to survive.

In spite of this, U.K. courts have said allowing the family to go to Italy for treatment would be futile and wrong.

They have also not allowed Alfie’s parents to take him home, calling them a “flight risk.”
