Texas man killed when family violence call ends in shootout

RIESEL, Texas (AP) — Police killed a Central Texas man early Friday when a family violence report ended in a five-hour standoff with deputies and a shootout. The McLennan County Sheriff's Office says 46-year-old William Earl Lane was shot dead early Friday after exchanging gunshots with sheriff's deputies and troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The episode began late Thursday with a report of a domestic disturbance at Lane's home just outside Riesel, a small town 14 miles southeast of Waco. Deputies found Lane in a field behind the house. After firing at officers twice during the standoff, Lane was killed around daybreak.
