Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that to destroy Hamas Israel intends to take full control of the Gaza Strip. He said Israel would eventually transfer Gaza's administration to friendly Arab forces, as the Security Cabinet discussed a widening of its 22-month offensive. Asked in an interview with Fox News if Israel would “take control of all of Gaza,” Netanyahu replied: “We intend to, in order to assure our security, remove Hamas there, enable the population to be free of Gaza.” The Security Cabinet would still need to approve such a decision. Hospitals in Gaza meanwhile said at least 42 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes and shootings.
Two Pennsylvania State Police troopers were shot Thursday morning, Gov. Josh Shapiro said at an event outside Philadelphia.
“About an hour ago in Susquehanna County, two state troopers were shot. Lori and I are praying for those troopers,” Shapiro said. “I want you to know I’ve communicated with Col. Paris. He is on the scene. It is an active situation and at the conclusion of this event I plan to head there myself.”
Christopher Paris heads the Pennsylvania State Police.
The shooting occurred in northeastern Pennsylvania.
A state police spokesperson, Trooper Logan T. Brouse, said the location was along Route 171 near the village of Thomson. That’s about 40 miles (63 kilometers) north of Scranton.
Sen. Dave McCormick said in a social media post that he was monitoring the developing situation. He also expressed empathy for the troopers who were shot.
“Dina and I are praying for our brave state troopers in Susquehanna County and monitoring the situation closely as more details emerge,” McCormick posted.
U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan said on X that he was “relieved to hear the troopers involved in today’s incident in Thompson Township are expected to be in stable condition.”
Texas Democratic lawmakers who left the state to block a Republican plan for congressional redistricting are pleading for donations to help cover their costs. Dozens of Democratic lawmakers have been camped out at a hotel outside Chicago. That's prevented the majority Republican Texas Legislatures from passing a plan sought by President Donald Trump to redraw more U.S. House districts in their party's favor before the 2026 elections. Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu says he's used money from his caucus to cover the hotel costs, and he paid for some smaller expenses with his own campaign account. Democrats also have been soliciting online donations.
A shooting and subsequent explosion and fire in a house in western Iowa left two people dead and a third critically injured, authorities said.
Dispatchers on Wednesday night received reports of a shooting in Glenwood, a town of roughly 5,000 about 150 miles (241 kilometers) southwest of the Iowa capital of Des Moines. At least two people were shot in the home, Glenwood Police Chief Eric Johansen said in a Wednesday night news conference. An explosion shortly after the shootings led to a raging fire, Johansen said.
A person of interest in the shootings and fire was taken into custody, the chief said. He would not say whether the person arrested was the one critically injured, adding that more information would be released by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, which is heading the investigation into the killings.
Police have not released the names of those involved. A spokesperson with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said the agency anticipated releasing more information later Thursday.
“This has been determined to be an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the community,” Johansen said.
The police chief said there was a history of law enforcement being called to the house, but he did not disclose the nature of those calls.
An undisclosed “technology issue” delayed more than 1,000 United Airlines flights across the U.S. United Airlines said in a statement Wednesday that flights on major routes were held at their departure airports because of a technology issue. The airline on Wednesday night said the underlying issue had been resolved but some delays remained. An alert on the Federal Aviation Administration website Wednesday says all United Airlines flights destined for Chicago were halted at their departing airports. The agency says Denver, Newark, Houston, and San Francisco airports were also impacted by halted flights.
