New York City is facing one of the most consequential city-wide races in American history. Cuomo, Adams and Sliwa have no plans on dropping out. Leaving Mamdani to win in a landslide.
An Israeli ultra-Orthodox party has announced plans to leave Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government. The decision destabilizes Netanyahu's leadership amid the ongoing war in Gaza. The party, United Torah Judaism, cites disagreements over a bill granting military draft exemptions for religious students. The issue has long divided Israelis and intensified as military demands grew during the war in Gaza. The departure, which goes into effect in 48 hours, leaves Netanyahu with a slim majority, increasing his reliance on far-right parties in his coalition. The political development comes as Israel and Hamas continue to discuss terms for a ceasefire.
A wildfire that destroyed a historic Grand Canyon lodge is continuing to spread out of control after it had been allowed to burn for days. Now the National Park Service’s decision not to aggressively attack the fire right away is coming under scrutiny. So far, the fire has leveled the historic Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim along with over 70 structures, including cabins and a visitor center. The fire began with a lightning strike on July 4 and intensified over the weekend because of high winds and dry conditions. Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs has called for a federal investigation into the Park Service's handling of the fire.
Syria’s defense minister has announced a ceasefire after days of sectarian violence in Sweida province. Government forces entered a key city in the province on Tuesday following clashes between local Sunni Bedouin tribes and Druze armed factions, which escalated when the security forces intervened. The conflict began with kidnappings and attacks, raising fears of sectarian violence. Religious leaders initially urged Druze fighters to surrender weapons, but some later accused the government of breaking promises and targeting civilians.
Former President Biden is defending his use of the autopen in the face of stiff criticism from Donald Trump. When it comes to the pardons and commutations he granted toward the end of his term, Biden said he “made every single one of those” decisions. He told The New York Times that he did not personally sign the paperwork and approved use of an autopen device because there were several thousand warrants. Biden argued that use of the autopen is legal and said President Trump and other GOP critics are lying when they claim he was incapacitated and that his aides misused the autopen.

The Supreme Court is allowing President Donald Trump to put his plan to dismantle the Education Department back on track and go through with laying off nearly 1,400 employees. With the three liberal justices in dissent, the court on Monday paused an order from U.S. District Judge Myong Joun in Boston, who issued a preliminary injunction reversing the layoffs and calling into question the broader plan. The layoffs “will likely cripple the department,” Joun wrote. A federal appeals court refused to put the order on hold while the administration appealed.
