Texas Democrats Prevent Vote On Trump's Efforts To Add GOP House Seats

Texas Democrats have prevented their state’s House of Representatives from moving forward, at least for now, with a redrawn congressional map sought by President Donald Trump. The map would shore up Republicans’ 2026 midterm prospects as Trump's political standing falters. After dozens of Democrats left the state, the Republican-dominated House was unable Monday to establish the quorum of lawmakers required to do business. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has made threats about removing some members of the opposition from their seats. Democrats pushed back Monday. Some mocked Abbott as the weak figure in the drama, saying he is “bending a knee” to Trump. And at least one legal expert casts doubt on the governor's ability to sanction any state lawmaker.

Trump Slams Monthly Jobs Numbers As “Rigged”

President Trump is doubling down on his criticism of last week’s monthly jobs report. In social media posts, the president slammed the July employment numbers as “rigged” and “concocted” in order to hurt the Trump administration. He complained about “massive” revisions to the previous two month’s numbers, calling them “fake.” And has alleged, without evidence, that partisan federal workers are trying to sabotage him. Last week, he fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and he promises to “pick an exceptional replacement” in the coming days.

TX Gov. Says Democrats Who Left State 'Forfeited' Office

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says Democratic lawmakers who left his state to block the GOP from redrawing congressional district boundaries have effectively forfeited their seats. Abbott insists he will begin trying to remove Democratic lawmakers from office if they do not return. Democrats in Texas and around the U.S. are pushing back. They say Abbott has no power to punish the lawmakers and that it's Republicans, including President Donald Trump, who are abusing their power. At issue are the U.S. House districts for Texas and whether Republicans can successfully redraw them to give the party a better chance to hold its slim congressional majority after the 2026 midterm elections.

2 Killed, 6 Wounded In Shooting After Music Festival In Los Angeles

A shooting erupted during a music festival after-party in downtown Los Angeles, killing two people and wounding six others early Monday, authorities said. Authorities first responded around 11 p.m. Sunday to shut down a “big party” after officers saw a person possibly armed with a gun go inside a building in a downtown warehouse district, said Officer Norma Eisenman. That person was arrested at the scene, she said. The party had been promoted on social media as an unofficial after-party for Hard Summer, a weekend techno-music festival held at Hollywood Park, about 9 miles (14 km) away in Inglewood, KTLA-TV reported. Shortly after officers had cleared the area, police received a report of shots fired around 1 a.m. When the officers returned, they found one person dead and learned multiple people had been struck by gunfire, Eisenman said in an email. A male victim died at the scene and a female victim died at a hospital, Eisenman said. Six people were taken to hospitals in unknown condition, she said. A man told KABC-TV that his 29-year-old son was one of the two people killed. There was no information about a suspect or a motive. Investigators remained at the scene for hours.

Boeing Fighter Jet Workers Go On Strike After Rejecting Contract Offer

More than 3,200 union members who assemble Boeing's fighter jets in the St. Louis area and Illinois went on strike on Monday after rejecting a second contract offer the previous day. Boeing Defense said it was ready for the work stoppage and it will implement a contingency plan that uses non-labor workers. According to the company, the rejected four-year contract would have raised the average wage by roughly 40% and included a 20% general wage increase and a $5,000 ratification bonus. It also included increasing periodic raises, more vacation time and sick leave. "We're disappointed our employees in St. Louis rejected an offer that featured 40% average wage growth," Dan Gillian, Boeing vice president and general manager of the St. Louis facilities, said in a statement. The offer was largely the same as the first offer that was overwhelmingly rejected one week earlier. Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers' District 837 "deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication, and the critical role they play in our nation's defense," District 837 head Tom Boelling said in a statement. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg downplayed the impact of a strike when talking with analysts on Tuesday about second-quarter earnings, noting that the company had weathered a seven-week strike last year by District 751 members, who build commercial jets in the Northwest and number 33,000. "I wouldn't worry too much about the implications of the strike. We'll manage our way through that," he said. District 837 workers assemble Boeing's F-15 and F/A-18 fighters, the T-7 trainer, and the MQ-25, an aerial refueling drone being developed for the U.S. Navy. Boeing's defense division is expanding manufacturing facilities in the St. Louis area for the new U.S. Air Force fighter jet, the F-47A, after it won the contract this year. District 751's strike ended with approval of a four-year contract that included a 38% wage increase.
