TX Gov. Abbott Deploys National Guard And State Police Ahead Of Planned Protests

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says he has ordered the deployment of more than 5,000 Texas National Guard troops across the state, along with more than 2,000 state police. Abbott said Thursday the troops and state police will help local law enforcement manage protests against President Donald Trump and ongoing federal immigration raids. Abbott's statement does not detail where the guard troops have been sent. Some were seen at a protest Wednesday night in downtown San Antonio. More protests are planned for Saturday in cities such as Houston, Austin and Dallas as part of the national “No Kings” movement.

An official says at least 240 people have been killed in the Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad. Vidhi Chaudhary, a top state police officer in Ahmedabad, said Thursday that the dead include medical students who were in a college hostel when the plane hit the building. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that a single passenger survived the crash and that he met him at the hospital. The Air India passenger plane bound for London with more than 240 people on board crashed after takeoff in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad. Black smoke billowed from the site where the plane crashed and burst into flames near the airport.

An Air India passenger plane with more than 240 people on board has crashed in the northwestern Indian city of Ahmedabad and officials say there are no known survivors. Visuals showed smoke billowing from the crash site near the airport in Ahmedabad. India's head of civil aviation told The Associated Press that Air India flight 171, a Boeing 787, crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar five minutes after taking off at 1:38 p.m. Among the dead on the ground were five medical students who were in a college hostel when the plane hit the building.
