A fire burned in a hilly area of California’s Laguna Beach on Monday (July 7), with plumes of smoke rising into the air, video and still photographs from the Newport Beach Fire Department showed.
Reuters was able to verify the location as the terrain matched the street view images, as well as the metadata of the original video. The date was verified by the metadata of the original video. Officials had also announced an evacuation order in the area due to the wildfire on Monday.
The Rancho Fire began at around 2:15 p.m. (2115 GMT) on Monday when a vegetation fire broke out in a hillside area, local media reported. The fire was contained to an area of approximately 4 acres (1.62 hectares), Newport Beach Fire Department told Reuters in an email.
Authorities said the blaze may have been caused by fireworks, local media reported.

Flash floods in Texas have killed more than 100 people, many of them children. Heavy rains fell quickly in the predawn hours Friday in the Texas Hill Country. That caused the Guadalupe River to rise 26 feet in just 45 minutes. The number of deaths reached at least 104 on Monday as a massive search continued for missing people. Among the missing are 10 girls and a counselor from a Christian summer camp. The July Fourth holiday weekend likely brought an influx of visitors to the area outside San Antonio, making it difficult to track everyone who may have been in the area.
Dozens of federal officers in tactical gear roamed a mostly empty park in a Los Angeles neighborhood with a large immigrant population for about an hour before clearing out. It wasn’t immediately known if any arrests were made Monday. Defense officials had said about 90 members of the California National Guard and over a dozen military vehicles would help protect immigration officers as they carried out a raid in MacArthur Park. Mayor Karen Bass was among the small crowd who watched as officers moved through a section of the park and then cleared out. Some activists who had earlier warned people to leave the area filmed the officers.
Officials in North Carolina say a woman was killed when floodwaters from the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal swept her car from a rural road and dozens of people were forced to flee their homes by floodwaters. The Chapel Hill Fire Department and neighboring agencies completed more than 50 water rescues, many of them in areas where floodwaters entered or threatened to enter apartments. In Orange County, the possibility of the failure of the Lake Michael Dam prompted officials to issue a voluntary evacuation for areas downstream. Chatham County authorities say they're searching for two canoers. North Carolina Emergency Management says parts of central North Carolina experienced hazardous conditions overnight including 3 to 8 inches of rain and possible tornadoes.
